When inspiration hits, there’s no stopping those creative juices from flowing - and in the world of design, anything is possible. Collaborations uniting the various arms of design are always exciting for me, It’s an opportunity to see an interpretation of a designers style portrayed on an alternate medium, an extension almost, of their design aesthetic.
The synergy between fashion and interiors has its roots in the 90's, when fashion brands began developing
complementary products and diversifying their offerings. By incorporating furniture and home decor lines into their collections, brands like Fendi and Versace expanded their core business and paved a way into a new era of high end, often mass-produced (no shade intended) luxury interiors. On the other end of the price spectrum, we can see the same diversification on the high street, with brands like Zara and H&M offering homewares.
With this in mind, what I’m keen to explore is the slightly more experimental design, and surprisingly to many, it’s IKEA that’s caught my attention. The Swedish-founded, flat-pack haven have thrown some surprising things into the world of furniture collaborations.

Not so much a design house exploring an alternative medium, as HAY is a furniture and homeware brand; but definitely not a brand that one would identify as having an immediate ‘fit’ with IKEA. Rolf Hay, co-founder of the Danish brand said “It’s fair to say that HAY and IKEA are two very different companies. But when we started talking to IKEA it became very clear that we shared many perspectives on design.” Titled ‘YPPERLIG’ the collaboration definitely has a Scandinavian feel, but has explored shapes and colour that are a step away from what might be expected from an IKEA collection.
The collaboration launched in May of this year, A collaboration between IKEA and Chris Stamp, owner of West Coast streetwear label Stampd, definitely has an edge. A clean combination of mesh, matte and masculinity - this fusion titled 'SPÄNST' beckons the 'young and fresh' designer in all of us. The collaboration is so unexpected for IKEA, it has a certain street credibility and grunge that diversifies what you might traditionally associate with picking up at IKEA.
If you’ve been hibernating under a rock for the past while and have missed the movement OFF-WHITE, and it’s owner/designer Virgil Abloh has made in the streetwear and luxury fashion worlds, do yourself a little favour and have a Google.
We’re still waiting for the official release date for this one, but what we do know is that the collection is titled “MARKERAD”and is described as “a collection of first home must-haves that don’t force you to compromise on who you are... these are statement pieces, challenging tradition”. Testament to the signature OFF-WHITE vision, Abloh's moves so far have reconstructed youth culture, graphic design, art history and luxury (cue his recent triumph debut at Louis Vuitton). We’ve seen the teasers for this IKEA collab, and it’s true to expectation; definitely not your average homeware collection, and certainly not like anything IKEA has ever seen. The collection is tongue-in-cheek, a little wacky, but none the less artistic and pushing the boundaries of tradition.
IKEA announced that their next collaboration will be with Saint Heron.
The multi-disciplinary hub Saint Heron, was founded in 2013 by singer-songwriter and actress Solange Knowles, it has its focus on building a community through music, visual art, performance art, art and architecture.
Solange and the company’s co-curator, artist Armina Mussa, created multimedia installations which creatively reflect art and cultural themes and push the conversations of communities to the forefront.
Marcus Engman, head designer at IKEA has spoken about the collaboration; 'Contemporary art is a huge part of people’s life today… At Ikea we are curious about the creative space in between architecture, design, art and music and how that could come alive in the homes of the many people. This is what we want to explore together with Saint Heron.'
Architectural and interior design objects with multi-functional use - sign us up! As it stands, there’s no release date published, but we will be patiently waiting for this capsule collection.
